Sun Safety for Kids

Share

2 min read.

The warm weather is finally here so now is the perfect time to educate the next generation about sun safety. Follow our simple sun care tips to empower your kids so they can have fun in the sun without worrying about damaging their delicate skin.

Education

If your children are aged seven or older, we would recommend having a chat with them about sun safety. Start by making them aware of the dangers so they understand why keeping safe is important. Teach them how to apply sun cream on their own as there may be occasions when you’re not with them. This could be an outing with their friends or a school trip when they would need to protect their skin.

Don’t just talk about sun cream, discuss the importance of sunglasses, hats and staying in the shade as well. By giving them these simple sun care tips, you will equip them with the necessary tools to look after their skin for years to come.

Preparation is key

Anyone with kids knows that whenever you go to the beach they’re always too excited to stand still. This makes it almost impossible to slather sun cream all over them. So be prepared and do it before you leave home. That way they are protected and can enjoy the sun straight away.

However, this is easier said than done, as the majority of children avoid sun cream at all costs! Try to make it part of their daily routine during the summer so that it becomes as natural as putting on their socks. Better still, make it fun by creating your own game. Try pretending that the sun cream is a magical protective layer that will give them superpowers. Then squirt them all over saying that it’s Elsa’s (from Frozen!) ice powers to keep them cool.

Break it up

You should try to avoid having your kids play outside between 11am and 3pm when the sun is at its hottest. If they are out and about during those times, then you should encourage them to take breaks from the sun by creating your own shady spot. This could be a pop-up shelter where they should sit when they’re having a drink or some food.

A parasol is also good for the beach, encourage them to build their sandcastles in the shade!

When at home, create a ‘cool room’ in your house. Go for the coldest room, draw the curtains and place a fan inside. Have fun with it and say that it’s a magical cooling cave for when the sun gets too hot. It will be the perfect place to retreat once they get hot and bothered. Whenever they’re having a break, encourage them to drink plenty of water to ensure they keep hydrated.

How much?

We would advise applying sunscreen liberally and generously on your kids 15 minutes before going outside. Ideally, you should reapply the same amount of sun cream every two hours. However, if your kids have been splashing about in the water, make sure that it is reapplied straight away. Sometimes it is not always convenient to reapply. Luckily for you, Calypso Once a Day Sun Protection contains a specially enhanced formula, so it lasts longer than other sunscreens. This gives your child worry-free protection for the whole day.

By following these easy tips, you can focus on having fun with your kids this summer, safe in the knowledge that they are protected from the sun.
