It looks like were in for a long, hot summer this year, which means that sun protection is a must. However, there are lots of myths out there regarding sunscreen, and its hard to know what is the best advice to take. Our Sun Care Specialist, Mr Seena Seka, has heard them all and has debunked the five most common myths about sunscreen.
1. You only have to apply two tablespoons of sunscreen to your whole body The recommended amount of sunscreen to use is 35ml, and this needs to be applied evenly over your whole body. 2. Sunscreens dont have a shelf life Sunscreens go out of date the same as cosmetic products. However, sun care products can change in texture and colour if they go out of date so you should always check the sunscreen before using it.
3. You cant tan when you have sunscreen on Tanning occurs when melanin is produced in an attempt to protect the skin cells from UV radiation.&nbsp;Therefore, a tan is a sign of damaged skin. While it may offer limited protection from burning, it doesnt prevent the harmful effects of radiation. Despite the risks involved in tanning, many consumers enjoy having bronzed skin due to the golden rich colour.
The biggest danger for our skin is sunburn and sunscreens are designed to prevent this as they are protection products. Many&nbsp;consumers believe that the best sunscreen for them is the one with a UVA star rating and it is featured on most sunscreens in the UK. However, it is not available on all sunscreens as it is an independent retailer initiative.

It was a busy week here at our Calypso headquarters planning lots of sun safety events for Sun Awareness Week, which ran from the 14th-20th May. The annual campaign is run by the <a href="http://www.bad.org.uk/for-the-public/sun-awareness-campaign/sun-awareness-week">British Association of Dermatologists (BAD)</a> and is aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of overexposure to the sun and encouraging people to check themselves regularly for signs of skin cancer.&nbsp;
We were delighted to be able to get involved in two important sun awareness events to encourage sun safety among military personnel and construction workers. These campaigns highlighted the fact that sunscreen is an everyday essential and not just something reserved for your annual sun holiday abroad.

Educating the military about sun safety with ScreenCancerUK
<a href="http://screencancer.com">ScreenCancer UK</a> provides life-saving cancer screening services and continually strives to find more innovative screening technology to improve their services. They organised a wellness event for the British Army on the 17th&nbsp;May and had a stand promoting sun awareness.
The campaign is very relevant, as a recent study from the <a href="https://www.aad.org/media/news-releases/skin-cancer-in-the-military">American Academy of Dermatology (AAD)</a> revealed that there is an increased skin cancer risk among U.S. military members. We helped out with this event by providing free Sun Lotion SPF30 sachets to the British military personnel who attended the event.

We also launched our partnership with <a href="http://www.bracknellroofing.com">Bracknell Roofing</a> during sun awareness week. The Burton on Trent-based company distributed our sunscreens to all of its 300+ roofers to encourage them to take care of their skin while theyre at work. This initiative was launched in response to a 2015 study by <a href="https://www.iosh.co.uk/News/Safety-and-health-professionals-sun-safety.aspx">Imperial College London</a>, which found that 42 per cent of malignant melanoma cancer cases involve construction workers. Other key sectors include agriculture, public administration and defence, and land transport.
When you think of occupational hazards on construction sites, you dont immediately consider the sun, but with a growing number of skin cancers being linked to this particular workforce, it is important for construction companies around the country to raise awareness about the dangers of working outside in the sun unprotected.

Spreading the Message of Sun Safety

The UK is getting set for an early Easter with <a href="https://abta.com/news-and-views/news/the-great-easter-bank-holiday-getaway-2017">over two million Brits</a> expected to ditch the cold weather for some much-needed sun.&nbsp;Those who were wise to 2018s bank holiday calendar will also have an extra long break to look forward to.
Long Easter break
Unlike other years, you only have to book eight days of annual leave this year to get&nbsp;a total of sixteen days off work from 24th March to the 9th April. That makes for the perfect two-week holiday in the sun.
However, the shock of leaving the colder UK temperatures for the hot Mediterranean climates can result in damaging effects, as many Brits often&nbsp;forget&nbsp;to apply their&nbsp;sunscreen.
In fact, a recent study by the <a href="http://www.bad.org.uk/for-the-public/sun-awareness-campaign/sun-awareness-week">British Association of Dermatologists (BAD)</a> revealed that eight out of ten Brits dont apply sunscreen before going out in the sun. This puts holidaymakers at an increased risk of developing melanoma due to prolonged exposure. The study&nbsp;also found that 70% of us dont re-apply the protection every two hours as recommended.

The summer holidays are now well underway with children from Lands End to John OGroats spending more time outside. With warm weather forecast for August, many parents are keen to protect&nbsp;their children against harmful rays. However, the British summer can be very unpredictable. Therefore, while its good to prepare for hot weather, we also need to be ready for cloudy and dull weather. &nbsp;
Unfortunately, the majority of people dont know about the risks associated with cloudy days. This was clear from&nbsp;the results of a&nbsp;survey of 100 people that we carried out earlier this year. The survey asked people about their sun protection over the Easter holidays and it found that almost 50 per cent would only use sun protection if the sun was shining. More alarmingly, only 21 per cent planned to wear any sunscreen at all during&nbsp;the Easter weekend.
This is very worrying as clouds can actually increase the levels of UV radiation. The rays can reflect off the clouds edge and intensify the level of exposure on the ground.&nbsp;It is therefore important to remember that just because you cant see the sun, it doesnt mean its not there.
With this in mind, we&nbsp;have compiled a list of our&nbsp;top three tips to keep your family safe during the summer holidays.

Pack the essentials

Heatwaves are very rare in Britain, and therefore it seems ridiculous to put on sunscreen when the sky is dull. This has been hotly debated and many parents have raised their concerns around how these rules could affect their childrens sun safety.

At present, parents are encouraged to apply sunscreen on their children on a day when the sun is out. They normally do it before they go to school. However, children will find themselves in all sorts of interesting situations  like covered in water or paint. On these occasions their sunscreen may rub off and will need to be reapplied.
However, if teachers are unable to apply the sunscreen themselves, then its vital that children know how to apply it. It is also essential that they understand why this is so important.&nbsp;This may seem like a difficult task at first but it can be done&nbsp;in three easy ways.

Make sure that your child is aware when sunscreen might have rubbed off. This could happen&nbsp;if they are playing with water or paints, or if they have used a towel. They must also understand that they need to wait 15 minutes after applying before going out into the sun. This is&nbsp;the length of time&nbsp;it takes for the sunscreen&nbsp;to form a protective layer on the skin.

However, kids can often be preoccupied with a game or too excited to get outside to remember. Embracing The Au Naturel Look This Spring

Of course you can. 
Clouds dont prevent all UVA / UVB radiation from reaching the earths surface. They are not a shield to UV rays. They may reduce or at times intensify radiation depending on circumstances. However, all-in-all; they are and never will be a shield to UV radiation.
Most people think they know about sun protection but there are many myths out there. We receive questions regularly&nbsp;from consumers who want to better understand the implications of poor sun protection. At times, the questions are genuinely worrying:
Do I need to apply sun cream if Im in the water for most of the day? 
Im going hiking tomorrow so do I need sun cream as its forecast to be cloudy? 
Does an SPF30 mean I can play in the sun all day?
The best came on a recent visit to my local store. I overheard a member of staff explaining how SPF30 actually means you need to be 30 years or older to apply it! I was shocked to hear that from a member of staff. Needless to say, I intervened.
I cannot give an accurate statistic as to how many of us are educated in sun protection. However, I believe there are only two factors that separate those at risk and those who will remain safe. They are common sense and preparation. 
We seem to remember our toothbrushes, hair gels and mascara, but forget a bottle of sun cream. This is just as important if not more important for your well-being. 
I feel the myths are more of a hindrance in educating consumers. Therefore, Ive come up with a few tips to help dispel some of the untruths out there:
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">Protection from UVA radiation is only measured by a star rating</h4>
Answer: False. 
In 2012, the European Standardization Organization published the Standard EN ISO 24443:2012 Cosmetics  Sun protection test method for UVA protection. If the UVA level of a product is more than one third of the SPF level, it is deemed safe. This means that it can have the logo printed on the pack. The logo is a circle with the letter UVA inside.
I notice certain products also use a star rating symbol. It is important to keep in mind that this is&nbsp;a retailer initiative and not a European recommendation. Hence, there is more than one way to measure UVA. Keep an eye out for added value in packs, e.g. extra volume or specialist accreditations. The cost of a sun care product is not proportional to the quality of protection. Spending over £100 on sun creams will never change an SPF30 product into an SPF50. What will keep you protected is common sense and preparation.
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">Sun creams will always prevent you tanning</h4>
Answer: False. 
Nothing will always prevent you tanning unless you stay indoors. There is even a small chance of tanning when you sit in the shade with a hat on. When our skin becomes tanned, it is ultimately a sign of skin damage. However, due to its bronzing effect and golden rich color, many consumers enjoy keeping a tan. It is a social reality we live in today. 
Sunburn on the other hand is the biggest danger to our skin. It is essential for consumers to understand the difference between tanning and burning. Sun creams are primarily made to prevent sunburn as they are protection products. Sunburn can be avoided by using higher SPF products.
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">Sun cream isnt important when its cloudy</h4>
Answer: False. 
Clouds dont offer any genuine protection against the suns UV rays when it is hot, so sun cream is necessary.
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">Sun creams do not go out of date</h4>
Answer: False. 
Sun creams and cosmetics in general do go out of date. There is a shelf life and it should be followed. On most cosmetics look out for the jar logo. This&nbsp;will indicate the number of months the product will last for after opening it. For example 12M is 12 months after opening. Sun creams are usually between 12 and 24 months. 
Sun care products can change in texture and colour if they go out of date so keep an eye out for this too.
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">The higher the price, the better the protection</h4>

With summer feeling like a distant memory, its time to start thinking about our winter holidays. For many of us that means dusting off the skis and hitting the slopes, and youll need everything from thermal tops&nbsp;to&nbsp;sun protection to ensure its a disaster-free holiday.

Ski season in Europe kicks off in December and runs right through until the end of April. People often think summer is&nbsp;when our skin needs the most sun protection, but winter breaks can be just as damaging. This is due to the glare from the piste, as well as dehydration and chapped lips. If youre heading to the mountains this winter, make sure you are well prepared in advance.
Here are some of our top tips to keep your skin healthy and protected:
<h4>Be sun safe</h4>
Being outside in freezing temperatures all day makes it easy to forget that we can still be affected by sunburn. On a sunny day, the snow can reflect up to 90% of the suns rays. This means that we are exposed to almost double the UV radiation. It is vital that sunscreen is applied regularly, ensuring that this is done 20 minutes before exposure to sunlight. As the UV is reflective, make sure that all skin not protected by skiing gear is fully covered. This should include those easy to miss spots such as under your chin and behind the ears.

If your children are aged seven or older, we&nbsp;would recommend having a chat with them about sun safety. Start by making them aware of the dangers so they understand why keeping safe is important. Teach them how to apply sun cream on their own as there may be occasions when youre not with them. This could be an outing with their friends or a school trip&nbsp;when they would need to protect their skin.
Dont just talk about sun cream, discuss the importance of sunglasses, hats and staying in the shade as well. By giving them&nbsp;these simple sun care tips, you will equip them with the necessary tools to look after their skin for years to come.
<h4>Preparation is key</h4>

<h4 style="text-align: justify;">What is the UVA star rating system?&nbsp;&nbsp;</h4>
The UVA star rating system allows you&nbsp;to see the level of protection that each sunscreen offers from UVA rays. The sunscreens that offer the minimum level of protection have&nbsp;one star and those with the&nbsp;maximum have&nbsp;five stars. The UVA star rating demonstrates the percentage of UVA radiation thats been absorbed by that particular sunscreen compared to UVB. Many&nbsp;consumers believe that the best sunscreen for them is the one with the highest UVA star rating.

Most sunscreens in the UK feature a&nbsp;UVA star rating on their packaging but it is not available on all sunscreens. This is because it is an independent retailer initiative. Our Calypso sunscreens do not currently provide a UVA star rating, although as it has grown in consumer popularity, we are looking at introducing it in the near future. We do have a UVA symbol circled on the packaging. This shows the consumer that the product complies with EU recommendations for product safety.
<h4 id="u104932-17" style="text-align: justify;">Is the UVA star rating reliable?</h4>
The UVA star rating is not completely reliable. This is the reason why some sunscreens do not have it on their packaging. The supposed level of protection that the product offers can be misleading. For example,&nbsp;a sunscreen with a low SPF may come with several stars indicating a high level of UVA protection. However, this is not the case as the ratio between the UVA and UVB protection is almost the same.
<h4 id="u104932-23" style="text-align: justify;">How do I find the best sunscreen?&nbsp;</h4>
It is essential to buy a sunscreen that has a high SPF. You should also do some research online to see which sunscreens have undergone independent tests by credible third parties.
