How to Keep Your Skin Protected During the Heatwave

2 min read.

Weather forecasters have predicted some of the warmest days of the year this week, with temperatures set to reach 39 degrees in London. While it’s good to make the most of the warm weather, it’s essential to take the necessary precautions to avoid getting dehydrated and prevent sun damage. With this in mind, we’ve created a list of our top five tips to protect your skin during the heatwave.

Seek shade during the warmest hours
With the school holidays well underway, most families will be taking advantage of the sunny weather this week with picnics in the park and trips to the beach. However, we would recommend doing outdoor activities early in the morning or the evening to limit your exposure when the sun is at its strongest. In the UK, this is usually between 11am and 3pm. If you can’t avoid going outside during the warmest hours, then you should take breaks throughout the day and spend some time in the shade.

Apply an adequate amount of sunscreen
When you do decide to venture outside in the sweltering heat, you should remember to apply enough sunscreen. We recommend using at least an SPF30 product and applying a sufficient amount of sunscreen, about 35ml, to ensure you cover your entire body. If you’re looking for a quick and easy spray for all over body and scalp protection, then you should try our new Once a Day SPF30 Spray. It protects your skin for up to 12 hours and is clinically proven to be ‘Very Water Resistant.’

Wear a sun hat
Aside from sunscreen, it’s essential to wear a hat when you’re outdoors to protect your face and neck from the sun’s harmful rays. A cap provides some protection, but a sun hat is much better. It’s also good to invest in a reliable pair of sunglasses that are durable and offer 100 per cent protection from UV light.

Drink enough water
It’s easy to forget to drink enough water when you’re busy making the most of the heatwave, but being outside all day in the sun can leave you feeling exhausted and dehydrated. We would advise eating lots of fruit and drinking at least two litres of water throughout the day to ensure you stay hydrated.

Use after sun in the evening
While it’s good to drink lots of water when you’re in the sun, you should also apply after sun when you’re indoors to help restore your skin’s natural moisture balance. We recommend moisturising from head to toe with our After Sun Lotion every evening to soothe and hydrate your skin. It contains Aloe Vera and special moisturisers, which not only relieve your dry skin but also help prolong your natural tan.

By following these simple steps, you can make the most of the heatwave this week, while also ensuring your skin stays healthy and protected.
